Vancouver firefighters found an unconscious man in a bedroom during a response to an apartment fire in the Ellsworth Springs neighborhood early Friday.

Vancouver Fire Department crews were dispatched at 2:39 a.m. to the Regency Apartments at 11301 S.E. 10th St. in response to an activated smoke detector. Dispatchers received 911 calls about smoke in the area of the apartment complex while crews were en route.

Crews arriving first found a first-floor apartment with smoke coming from a partially opened window. They forced their way into the apartment and found a fire burning in the kitchen that was quickly extinguished, according to a fire department news release.

Firefighters searched the apartment and found the unconscious man in a bedroom within the first minute of gaining access to the unit, according to the fire department.

He was treated by firefighter-paramedics on scene for smoke inhalation and a medical condition, then released.

Two engines remained on scene for about an hour to clear smoke.
