Letter: Kneeling is sign of respect

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s apology over the issue of players kneeling during the national anthem is better late than never. The act of kneeling is not and never has been one of disrespect, despite Donald Trump’s hostile interpretation of the gesture.

For centuries, men have knelt when proposing to the women they love. Worshippers kneel in church, humbling themselves before their God. If anything, it is a sign of respect.

Now the NFL needs to make amends with the man at the center of this “controversy” and allow Colin Kaepernick to be hired by a team and resume his career. Trump will object, of course, but his opinion is becoming increasingly irrelevant.
