WASHOUGAL — In March, Washougal School District hosted the Washougal Youth Arts Month Gallery to celebrate and showcase student art.

“Art not only helps students to creatively solve problems and exercise their imaginations, it also gets them excited about learning,” said Alice Yang, art teacher at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary and Canyon Creek Middle School. “This annual event is an opportunity to celebrate student creativity and see the amazing work that students accomplish in art class.”

The gallery included multimedia, watercolor, clay, video, photography, metal and wood student-crafted pieces. Student pieces on display were created in art and career and technical education classes from all Washougal schools.

Art programs are supported by Washougal school levies on the April 25 ballot. WSD would be required to make cuts and eliminate programs important to our students, including all arts and music programs, if the levies do not pass in April. Levy funds account for 20 percent of the district’s budget. Proposed levies are not new taxes; they replace two levies expiring at the end of this year. Washougal school levies on the ballot are proposed at a lower rate than last approved by voters in 2020.

Levy-funded art programs enrich students’ educational experience. “Art is important because it helps get your creativity out into the world,” said Lilly Kogel, fifth grade student at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School.

Support and appreciation for the arts is a longstanding tradition in Washougal. Washougal Youth Arts Month has been an annual tradition in this community for five years. Washougal School District partners with Washougal Arts & Culture Alliance for Washougal Youth Arts Month. Through programs like these, Washougal School District knows, nurtures, and challenges all students to rise.
